LEED-EB

The U. S. Green Building Council (USGBC) will be releasing a new LEED product in the Fall of 2004, LEED for Existing Buildings (EB).  LEED-EB consists of the same basic categories as LEED for New Construction (NC) but there are 85 possible points as opposed to 69.  The goal of LEED-EB is to help building owners operate their buildings in a sustainable way over the long term.

LEED Rating System

The LEED™ Rating System is a standard that improves environmental and economic performance of commercial buildings using established and/or advanced industry principles, practices, materials and standards.

LEED™ was created to:

  • define "green building" by establishing a common standard of measurement
  • promote integrated, whole-building design practices
  • recognize environmental leadership in the building industry
  • stimulate green competition
  • raise consumer awareness of green building benefits
  • transform the building market

Facility Evaluation

LEED-EB uses the ENERGY STAR energy performance rating system as a benchmark.  Points are achieved for exceeding the ENERGY STAR benchmark rating.  Some other points can be achieved through occupant recycling, chemical and pollutant source control, car pooling, and water reuse reduction.  Facility managers that have installed high efficiency motors and HVAC equipment, low flush toilets, and occupancy lighting sensors most likely have already achieved LEED-EB points.

EFI Cx will evaluate your facility and determine the LEED-EB points already achieved.  A facility wide audit will be performed for each building system as it relates to the LEED-EB rating system.  The facility evaluation report will be provided indicating the points you have achieved and the points that require a small amount of work to achieve.

LEED-EB Certification

The LEED-EB certification is an on going process even after the implementation of energy conserving strategies.  Some of the benefits to the owner are lower operating and maintenance costs, improved indoor air quality, and increased property values and occupant productivity.  EFI Cx can prepare a LEED-EB certification plan which will guide you through the certification process to achieve any level of green:

  • certified (32-39 points)
  • silver (40-47 points)
  • gold (48-63 points)
  • platinum (64-85)
